Abstract

392,100. Liquid controllers. PLANCHE, B. R., 3, Route de Frans, Villefranche-sur- Saone, Rhone, France. Nov. 25, 1932, Nos. 33432 and 33433. Convention dates, March 11 and June 13. [Class 38 (iii).] In an automatic starting rheostat in which electrolyte is pumped by the motor being started to immerse fixed electrodes, and in which the electrodes are finally short-circuited by the movement of a diaphragm acted on by the pressure of the electrolyte, three separate electrodes are provided electrically connected to the main electrodes, and arranged to vaporize the electrolyte and thereby open the circuit, or reduce the current, if the motor fails to start. The motor drives the vertical shaft 8 of the pump through gearing 9 enclosed in an airtight compartment 10, and the electrolyte is forced from the chamber 3 to a cylindrical compartment 6 containing the cylindrical main electrodes 12. If the motor fails to start, the electrolyte in a compartment 19 containing the separate electrodes 18 evaporates, and creates a pressure which forces the electrolyte back to the chamber 3 through a hole 21, which may be situated alternatively as shown in dotted lines, and thereby break the circuit or reduce the current. The level of the electrolyte is maintained by means of a float 35 in a compartment separate from the chamber 3, and operating a valve 37 communicating with a reserve chamber 13 supplied from a reservoir 49. The rate of pump feed may be regulated, and a regulating valve communicates the interior of the rheostat with the atmosphere. A valve is provided for retarding the flow of electrolyte during starting, and facilitating it during stopping. Specification 365,002 is referred to.
