Be it known that I, CHARLES REDDIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Long Island, in the county of Queens, State of New York,
.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prime-Mover -Dynamo Plants, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to" prime mover d namo plants, and particularly to such pllints employing an internal combustion en-' gine to drive a generator used to charge a storage battery. Its primary object is to regulate automatically the output of the generator.
It is often desirable to secure a tapering charge for a storage battery, and many. methods have been suggested to regulate a prime mover and generator in order to accomplish this result. Among them is the method described and claimed in C. E. Redeluding, when a quicker reduction of the digg, Serial No. 602,026, filed November 20, 1922 which consists in regulating the speed of an internal combustion engine through its timer mechanism in accordance with the height of the fuel in the fuel supply tank of the engine. In some cases, however, it is necessary to regulate the speed of the engine more accurately 01' to o tain a greater reduction in the speed of the engine ofi the generator in response to a definite lowering of the height of the fuel; and this invention provides means whereby these aims may be attained. These means comprise a float in the fuel supply tank of the engine and connections between it and the throttle valve thereof, in

The drawing shows one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 being an elevation of the entire plant, the vaporizer and tank being shown in section, and Fig. 2 being a sectional View of the vaporizer.
An internal combustion en inc 5 operates a dynamo electric machine 7 aving leads 8 and 9 connected to the terminals'thereof. A battery 10 is connected across these leads, and a load such as electric lamps 11 may also be inserted across them. shaft 13 of the engine is geared to the cam shaft 14 upon which is rotatably mounted a disc 15 bearing the ignition timer mechainsm.
The engine is provided with a tank 16 to hold the fuel supply therefor. A pipe 17 conducts this fuel to the vaporizer 18 where the amount of the mixture supp'liedto the engine is controlled by a plunger throttle 20 set therein. A float 2:3.placed in the ment in a counterclockwise direction may be limited by a vertically adjustable screw 30 set in a projection 31 above wing 26.
l A rod 32 attached to plunger 20 is fastened to the side of disc 15 opposite the wing 26, and serves to move the plunger 20 upwardly to reduce the volume of the mixture supplied to the engine as the fuel in the tank is diminished. Thus the engine speed may be reduced by two means during the battery charging or during any desired portion thereof so as to taper the battery charge with the desired celerity. If it is desired to control the engine speed through the throttle alone, rods 27 and 32' may be con nected by means other than' the timer mechanism. Other changes may of course be made in the arrangement without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention claimed is: I
1. In combination, an internal combustion engine, a generator driven thereby, a storage battery to be charged by the generator, a fuel supply tank, an ignition timer, and a throttle valve for the engine, andmeans including the throttle valve andthe timer for controlling the speed of the engine in response to the height of the fuel in said tan i 2. In combination, an internal combustion engine, a generator driven thereby, a storage fig battery charged by the generator, said enbetween the float, the timer, and the throttle valve so that the timing of the engine is retarded and the amount of the mixture supplied to it diminished as the fuel in the supply tank becomes exhausted.
3. In combination, an internal combustion engine, a generator driven thereby, a st0rage battery to he charged by the generator, a fuel tank and a throttle valve for the engine, a float in the tank, connecting means between the float and the throttle valve to control the amount of the mixture supplied to the engine, and adjustable means to limit the movement of said float.
In combination, an internal combustion engine, a dynamo electric machine driven thereby, a storage battery to be charged by the dynamo electric machine, sa d engine comprising a fuel supply tank, ignitlon timing mechanism and a throttle valve, a float in the fuel supply tank, connecting means between the float and the timing mechanism whereby the latter is regulated in accord. ance with the height of the fuel in'the tank, adjustable means for controlling the move ment of said float, connecting means between said timing mechanism and said throttle valve whereby the throttle valve is also controlled in accordance with the height of the fuel in said tank so as to regulate the amount of the mixture supplied to the engine.
