[Class 59.] In a roll or wheel feeder a follower plate 36 is provided which conforms to the curvature of the roll and is resiliently held in position adjacent to the roll, means being provided to arrest the inward movement of the plate and prevent it contacting with the roll. Vibration of the roll is provided for by means of internal loose balls. As shown a pocketed roll 9 is keyed by a central web 10 to a shaft 13, the ends being closed by plates 27, 28. The walls of the roll are thin and follow the contour of the pockets to provide an irregular surface against which balls 23, 24 vibrate to dislodge any material adhering to the pockets. The balls also strike the endplates 27, 28 and any material between the side plates and side walls of the casing is dislodged into recesses 29, 30. The spring-tensioned follower plates 36, 37, Fig. 2, are mounted on shafts 38, 39 and each plate covers two pockets. The shafts 38, 39 are provided with lever arms connected by a tension spring and screwed stops are provided on each arm to limit the inward movement of the follower plates. The sides of the casing 3, 4 are bulged to allow outward movement of the follower plates when tramp iron &c. becomes jammed between the follower plate and roll. Wear-resisting plates 50/51 are inserted at the edge of the follower plates and at the ridges between the pockets to provide a clean cut-off for the material. Renewable members 20, 21 are fitted to the inlet on the end walls 1, 2. One follower plate may be fixed or adjustable. A revolution counter may be fitted to the roller.
