Abstract

391,830. Machinery guards. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH, & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G. and PRATT, H., Scotswood Works, Newcastleon-Tyne. Nov. 5, 1931. No. 30694. [Class 80 (iv).] In a machine for moulding dough, bricks, soap tablets, &c., a hinged member 3 yields inwardly when the operator's hand is caught between it and one of the moulds 21, moving into the path of a vertically reciprocating moulding tool, causing a projection 7 on this member 3 to move a stop or pillar 8 movably mounted on the table of the machine under a stop 16 on the descending crosshead 11 so that further downward movement of the latter is prevented. The projection 7 may, instead of engaging the stop 8, contact a separate abutment moving with the stop 8. The hinged member comprises a flap door 3 rotatable about a horizontal hinge pin 5 which at its outer end is bent at right-angles to contact the switch button 18 of the driving motor. Two such doors 3, 4 are located in guards 1, 2 in diametrically opposite positions with respect to a column 10 on which the crosshead 11 reciprocates. The guards 1, 2 are hinged at opposite ends and, apart from periodic opening to adjust the moulding tools carried by brackets A, B, are permanently in the positions shown. Projections 7, 7<1> and stops 8, 8<1>, 16, 16<1> are provided at diametrically opposite positions. The stops 8, 8<1> are mounted on a ring 9 rotatable about the column 10 and are urged by springs 12, 12<1> secured to hooks 13, 14 on the ring and column respectively, the springs being mounted in slots 15 to allow a limited angular movement. A weaker spring 19 maintains the projection 7 against the stop 8 so that in the event of the latter not being withdrawn from beneath the stop 16, the door 3 remains open and the motor circuit broken. The vertical depending stop 16 may be replaced by a projection 17 cast on the crosshead 11. Side guards 20 are also provided. The motor drive may be through a clutch slipping at a load slightly above that necessary for the moulding operations, so that no damage is incurred by the contact of stops 8, 16 if for any reason the motor circuit is not broken.
