[Class 108 (ii).] A hollow front-axle structure comprises a central or main portion C, formed by welding the adjacent edges of a pair of shaped longitudinal sections 2, 2a, of pressed, stamped &c. metal, and cranked end portions A adapted to carry stub axles, welded to the ends of the central portion. Each end portion may comprise a unitary part or, as shown, a pair of longitudinal-shaped sections 1, 1a, welded together, preferably with flanged extensions 8 to reinforce the main axle portion. The sections 1, 1a are formed to provide a cylindrical hole 4 for a vertical pivot for the stub-axle fork and an annular seating 7 for the ends of the sections 2, 2a, the ends 8x of the extensions 8 bearing against the inner walls of the sections 2, 2a. In assembling, each end half section 1, 1a is laid in the corresponding central half section 2, 2a, and welded, preferably electrically, thereto at the junction 9 and reinforcing abutment 10, the assembled halves then being united by welding along the abutting edges 11, 12. Edges to be welded are preferably bevelled to provide V-shaped grooves as at 9. The end portions are finally bolted or riveted through holes 5. Where the end portions comprise unitary parts, they are inserted in and welded to the central portion after the half sections 2, 2a have been united, the reinforcing abutments 8x being secured by spot or flash welding.
