389,646. Echo-sounding apparatus. FLORISSON, C. L., 11, Rue de Cronstadt, Courbevoie, Seine, and SOC. DE CONDENSATION ET D'APPLICATIONS MECANIQUES, 42, Rue de Clichy, Paris. March 2, 1932, No. 6362. Convention date, March 2, 1931. [Class 118 (ii).] In echo-sounding apparatus for use on aircraft, the transmitter and the receiver are each located within a recess in the outer surface of the craft, the mouth of each recess being closed by a sound-permeable partition lying in the surface of the craft so that it neither protrudes therefrom nor produces a depression therein. The transmitter 2 and the receiver 4 are located in paraboloidal reflectors fitted on a smooth surface 1 of the aircraft. The reflectors are provided with acoustic insulating material 6 and are closed by panels 3, 5, preferably of fabric, through which sound can pass. The sound is emitted by a whistle 17 controlled by a valve 20a actuated by an electromagnet 19 energized when contacts 14 are closed by a constantly-rotating cam 13. The echo is conveyed to the ears of the observer by an acoustic channel 7 which is blocked by a device 25 during the emission period. The channel 7 contains an acoustic filter 9. A " false echo is produced by a device 11 and supplied to the channel 7 through an intensity-regulating device 27. The device 11 is actuated by the closing of contacts 21 by the cam 13. These contacts are adjusted angularly round the camshaft until the " false echo " coincides with the actual echo. The extent of this angular adjustment, indicated on a scale 24, is thus a measure of the height of the aircraft. The " false echo " may be different in pitch from the true echo and the formation of beats in the ears of the observer may be utilized as an indication that the two sounds are in coincidence. The acoustic channel 7 may be replaced by an electrical one having a microphone at one end and telephones at the other, the acoustic filter 9 being replaced by a corresponding electrical device.
