[Class 106 (ii).] A ship's log of the Pitot-tube type actuates a speed indicator by means of a U-tube liquidpressure gauge having a floating piston in one limb to operate through a lever and flexible connection to the indicator, the other limb being subjected to the normal pressure of the water of flotation, a vent for trapped air being provided ; the liquid level gauge being journalled to keep the limbs vertical. The Pitot tube 3 is connected by a flexible pipe 6, 7 to the actuating gauge chamber 8 in which a piston 20 floats on mercury and has a stem 21 passing freely through a passage 22 into a lower chamber 19 and engaging a lever pivoted therein. The mercury fills the lower chamber and continues into a vertical pipe 11 up which is led a flexible member 13, attached to the free end of the lever and passing up to a speed indicator 14. The gauge chambers are swung by means of a bar 27 and the pipe 11 on journal pins 28, 30, the pin 30 being on an adjustable clamp 33 on the pipe 11, to maintain the U- tube chambers vertical when the ship rolls, a short tubular sleeve 35 of resilient rubber and tubular guide block 40 carrying guide pulleys 36, 37, Fig. 4, for the flexible member ensuring proper movement. The surface of the mercury in the pipe 11 is exposed to the pressure of water of flotation through a pipe 10 open to the orifice 2 surrounding the Pitot tube and a vent pipe 17 for voiding trapped air extends above water level.
