Abstract
388,745. Rotary kilns. ALLEN & CO., Ltd., E., Imperial Steel Works, Sheffield, and GILBERT, W., 31, Criffel Avenue, London. Aug. 27, 1931, No. 24155. [Class 51 (ii).] In a rotary kiln for the manufacture of cement by the wet process, drying of the slurry is effected in a section of the kiln which is rotated at a higher speed than the calcining and clinkering section, and is provided with means for cascading the material and sub-dividing it during its fall into small lumps which are distributed uniformly over the cross section of the kiln. In the apparatus shown slurry is lifted from a reservoir f by a scoop g and is fed into a section i of the drying-drum a the wall of which is left smooth. In the next section i<2> of the drum are cascading vanes kl, k<2>, k<3> and an independentlv rotatable wheel n carrying longitudinal cutter bars o. The section i<4> of the drum has vanes k<4>, which may be slightly helical, and succeeding this is a plain section i<5> with a scoop q which lifts the dry material and feeds it through a conical connecting piece p into the upper end of the main kiln. Inclined blades s prevent back feed of the material into the seal u. The vanes kl, k<2>, k<3> may be inclined to the radii at progressively decreasing angles. The drying drum and cutter wheel may be rotated respectively at 18 and 120 revolutions per minute.
