Abstract

388,662. Moulding artificial resins &c. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. July 27, 1932, No. 21222. Convention date, July 31, 1931. [Class 87 (ii).] Tubes or other articles of artificial resin or other plastic material moulded by means of a central core which is liable to be distorted under the moulding pressure, are produced with a conduit or left-in core accurately centered by moulding against a counterpressure acting on the die. Fig. 1 shows one example in which a core 7, fixed to the lid 2 of a die, is mounted slidably in the plunger 8 to which the counterpressure is applied. When the material is delivered under heavy pressure through the feed orifices 3 it forces the plunger 8 downwards, gradually unsheathing the core during the process. The counterpressure may be applied by hydraulic or mechanical apparatus, for example by counterweights, by friction between the plunger and the walls of a suitable vessel or by dashpot mechanism. The core 7 may be arranged to be left in or removed from the finished article. Fig. 2 shows a modified construction in which the core 15 is fixed to the end of the counterpressure plunger 14 and slides through a hole 16 in the cover-plate. When the plunger has been pushed right out of the die 11 against the action of the weights 20, the friction of the material against the walls of the die may supply sufficient counterpressure for the continuance of the operation. Alternatively, the emerging end of the material may be held by friction gripping-members. The inlet end of the apparatus may be maintained at a comparatively low temperature when dealing with artificial resin. Fig. 3 shows a construction for making tubes. The plunger 25 forms a sliding guide for the fixed core 32, and the tube is formed when the moulded material moves on past the end of the core. Articles may be made with multiple cores or a plurality of conduits, and in some cases the main die may be lined with a metal or other tube so that a covered moulded cored or tubular article is produced. Such an article can itself be used as a core in a subsequent moulding operation to produce articles built up in laminated rings.
