Abstract
Fibrous materials such as animal and vegetable hair, feathers, sea-weed, hay and tow, are coated with a horny material such as keratin, and also with a layer of vulcanized rubber, to produce a substance applicable for upholstery, heat insulation, carpet underlays, and as a substitute for bristles in brushes. The keratincontaining material is obtained by boiling slaughter-house refuse with water under pressure, or by treatment with alkali. It may be treated with formaldehyde. The adhesion of the keratin may be improved by coating the fibres with an adhesive such as glue or shellac. After coating with keratin, the fibres are separated before coating with rubber. The material may be shaped before the rubber is vulcanized.ALSO:Fibrous materials such as animal and vegetable hair, feathers, sea-weed, hay, metal cuttings, tow, are coated with a horny material such as keratin, and also with a layer of vulcanized rubber, to produce a substance applicable for upholstery, heat insulation, carpet underlays, and as a substitute for bristles in brushes. The keratin-containing material is obtained by boiling slaughter-house refuse with water under pressure, or by treatment with alkali. It may be treated with formaldehyde. The adhesion of the keratin may be improved by coating the fibres with an adhesive such as glue or shellac. After coating with keratin, the fibres are separated before coating with rubber. The material may be shaped before the rubber is vulcanized.
