387,438. Casting tyre and other moulds. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, DAVIES, T. E. and BLACKMORE, H., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. Nov. 12, 1931, No. 31326. [Class 83 (i).] Casting - machines ; moulds ; clamping moulds.-Tyre and other moulds or cores are made by die-casting metal on a foundation so as to provide a mould surface of required form. The cast metal forms only part of the mould surface and the foundation may be fitted into a reinforcing shell or directly into vulcanizing apparatus. The foundation shell 1 is carried by a rotatable table 19, Fig. 2, provided, if desired, with indexing mechanism. A die 41, having a cavity corresponding to required transverse ribs to be cast, is clamped by means of a toggle 44 to the inside of the shell 1, the outside being supported by a formation of the table or an adjustable arm 48. A casting- machine 11 is pivoted on a shaft 25 and supported by a spring 33 suspended from a shaft 29, both shafts being adjustably secured on rails 26. The machine is normally depressed by a cam 37, on the shaft 29, engaging a projection 34, but in the position shown the cam allows the spring 33 to force the nozzle 23 into engagement with one of the gates 24 formed in the shell. The metal is forced in by compressed air through a passage 13 in the closure 14. Undercut grooves 6, Fig. 1, or holes 7, 9 are formed in the shell and in any circumferential ribs 8 thereof. The gates 24 may then be plugged. In modifications other means may be used for introducing the molten metal, a gate may be formed in the die instead of gates in the shell, the die may be heated in any way, the rotation of the table may sever runners or otherwise finish the casting and any of the operations may be performed by power means, the whole cycle being carried out automatically if desired.
