Abstract

386,708. Vacuum pumps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GALLIZIA, E., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Aug. 31, 1931, No. 24455. [Class 71.] A barometric valve in which a pipe 4 extends into mercury &c. is interposed in the suction conduit by which a mercury arc rectifier is evacuated, e.g. between a vapour pump such as a diffusion pump and a rotary oil backing pump 3, to seal the container against inlet of air in case the pump pressure should rise, and the liquid level in the valve is automatically lowered when the valve is not required, by means responsive, e.g. to the pressure or the power supply. Fig. 1 shows a float 7 of magnetic material depressed by springs 8 and raised by a solenoid the circuit of which is broken by a switch 10 actuated by a relay circuit closed by the mercury in a pressure gauge 14. A switch may short-circuit the contacts 10 at starting. Fig. 2 shows an auxiliary mercury container 15 the rotation of which supplies mercury to or withdraws mercury from the valve container 1. A window 17 in conjunction with pointers 18 allows the level to be observed; this window may be constituted by the auxiliary container. Both means of regulating the level may be used in conjunction.
