Abstract

386,630. Electrodeposition of metals. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., 17, Victoria Street, London.-(Assignees of Clamer G. H. ; 129, S. Berkeley Square, Atlantic City, New Jersey, U.S.A.) April 14, 1931, No. 11013. Convention date, April 14, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 41.] An alloy of predetermined composition is formed at the surface of an-iron or steel object by coating the iron or steel with a plurality of layers of different metals in the proportions required to produce the alloy and then fusing the metals into union with the iron or steel. For example one or more layers of nickel and chromium may be deposited on a steel surface electrolytically and fused into the surface by passing alternating current through an induction coil surrounding the object, to form a layer of stainless steel at the surface. By varying the thickness &c. of the coatings, the time of heating and the frequency of the alternating current the nature and depth of the alloy may be varied ; for example the steel base may be surrounded by a layer of stainless steel containing for example 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel with an outer layer of pure chromium or alloy rich in chromium. Figs. 1 and 2 show the application of the method to the interior surface of a cylinder and the outer surface of a roll respectively, the steel base 7 being coated with layers of metals 5, 6 which are fused into the surface by the passage of alternating current from a source 9 through an induction coil 8 or 81.
