Abstract

386,428. Glazing windows ; draught and weather excluders. TURNER, D. B., BALL, W. A., Albion Saw Mills, Sheaf Street, Sheffield, and NEWSUM, SONS, & CO., Ltd., H., Lea, Road, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Dec. 23, 1931, No. 35512. [Class 20 (iii).] Relates to windows and doors of the kind in which rabbets are formed in the fixed outer frame and in the inner fixed or moving frame, the said rabbets being provided with grooves so formed as to prevent the ingress of draught, moisture, or dust. According to the invention, the grooves 10, Fig. 2, in the outer frame 30 are formed with sloping or inclined walls, and the space provided by each groove is enlarged by the corresponding groove 18 of the inner frame. Further, the vertical faces 19 of the rabbets of the inner frames are spaced apart from the inner edges of the grooves 10. In the form shown, the window comprises a horizontally hinged upper sash 11 and a vertically hinged lower sash 13 which are positioned, as shown, between the head 5, transome 9, sill 6, and stiles 7 of the frame 30. The inner rabbeted surfaces of the sash and window frames have a clearance 17 between them, which clearance, along the vertical and lower edges of the frames, opens into weathering grooves 21 in the frame 30. The lowermost grooves 10 are drained of any moisture collecting therein by weep holes 22, the exit openings of which are situated in a weathering groove 23 in the sill 6 and transome 9. The weep holes are protected from the direct action of the wind and rain by baffle plates 24. Grooves 25 and weep holes 26 are provided to drain off any moisture which condenses on the inner faces of the glass panes. In a modification, the sash frames are similarly constructed but are secured rigidly within the frame 30. In a further modification, the glass is secured within the frame 30 by a beading 27, Fig. 4, which is formed with grooves 28 in a similar manner to the construction described above.
