Description

United States Patent O WINDOW SASH Eric Sigfricl Persson, Malmo, Sweden Application February 23, 1951, Serial No. 212,378
1 Claim. (Cl. 20-56) The present invention relates to window sashes. Wooden window sashes offer good facilities for the insulation of the side of the sash facing the room from the side thereof facing the atmosphere against the passage of cold. On the other hand, a wooden sash generally requires to be made to such dimensions that the possibilities of building screening members, particularly Venetian blinds and the like, and also locking and controlling means into the sash are poor.
The present invention has for its object to utilize the advantages of the wooden sash and at the same time to obviate said drawback inherent therein. It is a further object to obtain a window sash having a sash piece, imbordering one edge of the pane such as the top edge of the pane, made entirely or substantially from metal, whereas that member or those members of the sash which extend along the remaining edges of the pane are made entirely or substantially from wood. The metallic sash piece may be formed by a profile strip and is adapted to form, together with the remaining member of the sash, a channel for the edges of the pane extending around the periphery of the pane. The arrangement of a metallic sash piece at one border of the window involves, above all, that a larger space is obtained here for mounting Venetian blinds and the like therein. Furthermore, a sash of this description permits of being manufactured at a relatively low price while also possessing a number of other advantages. The metallic sash piece may be provided with flanges to retain the glass pane, as well as with flanges to cover the blind or other contrivances mounted into the window.
The invention may be applied both to single sashes and to coupled outer and inner sashes. A special field of application will be found in coupled sashes, one of which is made entirely from metal and the other with a metallic sash piece but otherwise from wood, a heat insulating packing being generally provided between this metallic sash piece and the corresponding portion of the metallic sash.
The invention will be illustrated with reference to a few forms of embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 shows the left-hand half of a window in vertical projection, said Window half having a sash suspended at the side thereof. Figs. 2 and 3 show transverse sections on lines IIII and IIIIII in Fig. 1, respectively. Fig 4 shows a vertical projection of the right-hand half of a window provided with sashes which are swingable about a horizontal central axis. Figs. 5 and 6 show transverse sections on lines VV and VI-VI in Fig. 4, respectively.
See
In Figs. 1-3, 1 designates the frame adapted to be rigidly fitted into a wall opening, said frame being here taken to be made from wood, and 2 denotes the sash which is movably arranged in the frame. The sash 2 is suspended in the frame 1 by means of hinges 3 at the one vertical side of the window. 4 designates the window pane which is mounted in the sash. Accord ing to the invention, a piece of the sash, here constituted by the sash piece 5 extending along the top edge of the pane 4, is made from metal, whereas the remainder of the sash, that is to say the portions 6 extending along the lateral edges of the pane and along the bottom edge thereof in the embodiment shown, consists of wood. The metallic sash piece is provided with flanges 7 to retain the panes and with a flange 8 forming an abutment against the frame 1. On the inside of the pane 4, the sash piece 5 may carry a screening member, such as a Venetian blind, a roller blind or the like.
Figs. 4-6 show the application of the invention to a pivot window provided with double sashes, that is to say a metallic outer sash 9 with a Window pane 10 and an inner sash having a metallic top piece 11 while consisting otherwise of a wooden sash frame 12 adapted together with the top piece 11 to retain a window pane 14. The sashes are carried by pivot hinges 15 on the vertical side portions of the wooden sash frame 12 in a surrounding frame 16, which is here made from wood but may also be conceived of as consisting of some other material. The outer sash 9 is suspended on the inner sash by means of hinges 17 at the border of the sashes which is the lowermost one in the closed position of the window, and bears at the top against the metallic sash piece 11 of the inner sash through the intermediary of an insulating packing 18 adapted to prevent cold from being conducted from the outer sash inwardly to the inner sash 11 and the inside of the window.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiments shown, which are only intended to serve as illustrating examples. For example, it is not necessary that the portion of the sash located at the upper border of the window is made from metal, it being possible instead to form either one of the vertical lateral members as a metallic sash piece, which may constitute the attachment for a jalousie, roller blind or other screening contrivance adapted to be drawn out horizontally.
What I claim is:
A window sash comprising a pair of stile members and a bottom rail of wood and a top rail of metal, said top rail having a downwardly extending flange provided with a pane-receiving channel at its lower edge, an auxiliary sash of metal hinged at its lower portion to said bottom rail, said auxiliary sash having a downwardly extending flange at its upper portion provided with a pane-receiving channel at its lower edge, said downwardly extending flanges being spaced apart to provide a housing at the upper portion of the sash.
