Abstract

386,111. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Dec. 29, 1931, No. 35918. Convention date, April 20. Addition to 386,063. [Class 39 (i).] In. electron - discharge tubes of the type described and claimed in the parent Specification each anode chamber is provided with a heating or heatretaining device. For this purpose a heating coil may be arranged around the anode chamber or the latter may be covered with asbestos or provided with a double wall with the intervening space e exhausted. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 1, the anode chamber 10 is placed directly over the cathode chamber 1 and is heated thereby. The cathode comprises loosely coiled wire gauze 4 mounted in a heating coil 3a, the coil and the inner and outer surfaces of the gauze being coated with a substance providing high electron emission. The tube 6 is provided with a flared extension 17 directed towards the cathode and one of the leads of the coil 3a carries a screen 18 arranged to attract a large proportion of the ions coming from the tube 6. The tube 8 connecting the chambers 1, 7 is formed with a helical portion 14 protected by cylindrical glass sleeves 15, 16. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the anode chamber 10 is sunk into a recess 12 in the top of the cathode chamber 1 and is covered by a heat-retaining hood 13, e.g. of glass. Radiation of heat from the cathode is reduced by a screen 19 and ignition is improved by providing the tubes 6, 9 with metal points 20, 21 within the chamber 7. The tubes 6, 9 may be used as control electrodes.
