Abstract

An antihalation layer, more particularly for a sensitive layer which is to be developed to a positive by reversal, consists of colloidal silver and a binding agent such as gelatin, casein, or the calcium salt of polyglucuronic acid. The layer may be situated on the rear of the support, or between the sensitive emulsion and the support. The size of the silver particles, which can be varied by adding an electrolyte such as disodium phosphate during or after the preparation of the colloidal mixture, is preferably such that the layer has a spectral permeability over the range 550-700 m m , and the support of the layer is preferably dyed with a dye covering the gap of absorption of the antihalation layer, such as blue, violet, or lavender. Suitable dyestuffs are mentioned in the Specification. The colloidal silver dissolves in the reversal bath, but the dye remains in the support to colour the final picture in the case of a positive produced by reversal. In an example, the colloidal silver coating material is prepared by adding hydrazine sulphate slowly to a warm water solution of silver nitrate, ammonia, and gelatin, heating, allowing to solidify, cutting into small pieces, and washing. It is applied in molten condition to form the antihalation layer, and the support is dyed with aniline blue dissolved in a methanol and alcohol mixture in the case of nitrocellulose support, or in a methanol and acetone mixture in the case of acetyl cellulose support.
