Abstract
Fats and fatty oils are improved in taste and smell by treatment below 100 DEG C. with hydrogen under pressure in presence of a non-noble metal catalyst, the quantity of hydrogen taken up being insufficient to change practically the viscosity and other physical constants of the oil and never more than about 10 litres per 500 gms. of oil. Specified oils treated are linseed, castor, colza, rape, walnut, and maize oils. For example, 1000 gm. of castor oil is treated at 80 DEG C. for \ba1/4\be hr. with hydrogen at 1,75 atmospheres in a stirring autoclave in presence of 1 per cent of highly active nickel catalyst as a carrier; 2 litres of hydrogen are absorbed, and the purgative action of the oil is not diminished.
