Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by heating any salt of a fatty acid in a solvent with calcium formate or the salt of another fatty acid and simultaneously reducing the carbonyl compound formed by means of hydrogen under pressure in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst. The fatty acid salts may be those of barium, strontium, magnesium, the alkali metals, and the heavy metals, e.g. zinc, nickel and copper. According to the examples, octodecyl alcohol is obtained by forcing hydrogen into an autoclave containing a solution of sodium stearate and calcium formate in water or cyclohexane to which copper carbonate precipitated on kieselguhr has been added and maintaining the autoclave at an elevated temperature for some time; similar treatment of a mixture of the calcium salts of acetic acid and the fatty acids of coconut oil yields a mixture of the secondary alcohols C11H21.CHOH.CH3 and C13H25.CHOH.CH3.
