385,311. Discharge lamps. CLAUDELUMIERE, SOC. ANON. POUR LES APPLICATIONS DES GAZ RARES A LA LUMIERE, PROCEDES G. CLAUDE, 3, Avenue de l'Opera, Paris. March 17, 1931, No. 8115. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] An arc discharge tube contains a gas consisting of at least one rare gas and no light-giving metallic vapour, at a pressure between 0À1 to 3 millimeters, the pressure being lower the greater the cross section of the tube, and the value of the pressure in millimetres is included between the limits 0À6/d and 8/d, where d is the diameter of the tube in centimetres. The filling is neon with or without a small addition of argon, crypton, or xenon. The cathode 6 is of potassium or other alkaline metal and the cathode chamber is arranged as described in Specification 379,271, so that vapour is excluded from the lighting tube 9 ; or the cathode may be indirectly heated. The anode is hollow and is provided with a dielectric lining and covering 13, so as to confine the discharge to a small zone of one-seventh the total area of the anode. The envelope is closely spaced from the anode so as to confine the deposition of volatilized material to the interior of the anode. The electrodes and inner wall of the envelope are charged with occluded gas by temporarily increasing the gas pressure or by means of a discharge. A resistance 7, absorbing one-tenth of the consumed energy, is included in the circuit. Dimensions, characteristic curves, and the best conditions for operation are given.
