Abstract
384,894. Bath-chairs; ambulances. MURRAY, J. L. W., Dundarach, Craiglockhart Park, Edinburgh. April 26, 1932, No. 11945. [Class 108 (i).] A chair which may be converted into a bed, bath-chair, or ambulance is provided with an adjustable thigh elevator and foot rest, and may be adjusted or converted by the occupant. A rigid frame 1 has a jointed frame 2 attached thereto through pivots 3, 4 and forms the seat, leg and foot members. A head member 5 is also attached to the pivots 3 and is maintained in an erected position by the engagement of catches 7 with pins 8 mounted on arms 9. A thigh elevator 25 is pivotally attached to the frame 2 and is operated through arms 27 and links &c. by a bevel gear 37 mounted on a shaft 36. A pair of independent foot rests 24 are pivotally attached to the foot member and also operated through links &c. by a pair of bevel gears mounted on the shaft 36. An arm rest 2a is secured to the frame 2 and collapsable shutters 11 are provided. For use as an ambulance or bed, the head member 5 is lowered to a horizontal position by a worm 15 and quadrant gear 14, and the arm 2b which is attached to the foot member urges the latter forwards and upwards to form a continuous horizontal surface with the jointed frame 2. The lower end of the bed is supported by a strut 2c having teeth 2d which engage a knife edge 2e. Telescopic carrying handles 58, 59 are provided. A spring mattress extends over the head member 5 to the front of the seat, and a second mattress covers the leg member and foot rests. The mechanism for adjustments &c. may be operated by an electric motor and the controls are mounted within reach of the occupant. A table 60 is hingeably carried on arms 61, 62 and may be folded flat against the head member 5 when not in use. The qhair is mounted on wheels provided with brakes and may be driven by an electric motor 67.
