Abstract

384,664. Coating leather. SHAW, C. G., Huntsville, and HOFFMAN, J., 488, Willard Avenue, Toronto, both in Ontario, Canada. May 28, 1931, No. 15624. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1930. [Classes 76 and 140.] Leather which has been previously compacted is prepared for coating by treating the grain side of the leather first with a slightly alkaline aqueous solution and then with a slightly acid aqueous solution and with a sulphonated oil or oil emulsion. The leather is then dried and coated with a thin layer of composition in such a manner that the hair holes are not plugged. The alkaline bath may consist of a solution of borax or sodium or potassium carbonates or bicarbonates and the acid solution of a weak organic acid such as acetic or lactic acid, with about 2 per cent of a sulphonated oil such as sulphonated fish oil. Treatment with a sulphonated oil may follow the acid treatment and a mineral oil emulsified by triethanolamine soap may be substituted for the sulphonated oil. The coating comprises a priming coat of pyroxylin and china wood oil and an outer pigmented coat comprising, in addition to pigment, pyroxylin, dibutylphthalate, neat's foot oil, butyl acetate, ethyl acetate and toluol. A final coat is applied consisting of an emulsion of carnauba wax and ceresin wax in sulphonated castor oil prepared by mixing these ingredients, diluting with water then passing through a colloid mill and further diluting. Specification 384,663 is referred to.
