Abstract
384,604. Automatic circuit-breakers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London, and HEATH, A. A., Lydstep, Rowley Park, Stafford. July 12, 1932, No. 19684. [Class 38 (v).] Operating mechanism for a circuit-breaker comprises a setting toggle 14, 15 for locking the closing mechanism after an initial movement of an operating handle 2, and an auxiliary toggle 20, 21 for releasing the setting toggle 14, 15 when tripped, the tripping of the auxiliary toggle 20, 21 releasing an energy-storing device 24, which is adapted to collapse the setting toggle. The operating-rod 5 is biased in the opening direction to the right and is moved to the left after a preliminary clockwise rotation of the handle lever 2 to set the toggle 14, 15. The lever 2 is integral with a rotatable crank disc 3 having a pin-and-slot connection 4, 6 with a triangular plate 7 pivoted at 8. Clockwise rotation of the lever 2 rotates the plate 7 clockwise, thereby rotating a link 12, pivoted to the plate 7 at 13, about a pivot 11 until, nearing the position of Fig. 2, a spring 17 oversets the toggle 14, 15 which is pivoted at 8, 11. The engagement of the pivot 13 with a projection 18 on the link 14 causes the parts, on rotating the handle 2 in an anticlockwise sense, to rotate together and by means of a link 10 to move the rod 5 to the left, the rod being guided by a link 9 also pivoted at 8. Movement of the pivot 38 allows a lever 36, 39 to rotate about its pivot 37 so that the end 39 engages a shoulder 40 on the disc 3 to hold the breaker closed, Fig. 3. During the initial clockwise movement of the plate 7, a pin 31 on a lever 28 pivoted to the plate 7 and to a fixed pivot 30, engages a lever 19 to rotate it about the pivot 8 and compress a spring 24, the parts 19, 24 being held in this position by the oversetting of an auxiliary toggle 20, 21 by a spring 23. The adjustable trip lever 32 is rotatable about its pivot 33 to break the toggle 20, 21 downwards, whereupon the spring 24 rotates the lever 19 so that a pin 35 thereon engages the link 15 to break the toggle 14, 15 and allow the breaker to open. During the opening movement, the pin 38 engages the end 36 of the locking lever to free the disc 3 ready for a further closure. The parts shown are duplicated on either side of a vertical central plane containing the rod 5, and housed in a casing which is apertured to receive shoulders on the discs 3 on which shoulders the discs rotate. The outer ends of the levers 2 are connected bv a horizontal handle part.
