Abstract

Stone, concrete, e.g. deteriorated parts of buildings, and layers of earth are strengthened by injecting under pressure an aqueous solution of a soluble silicate and an aqueous solution of an alkali, alkaline earth, or earth metal salt. Bore holes may be made in the stone &c. to facilitate injection of the solutions. If the material is already wet, one or both of the solutions may be replaced by the dry salt which is pressed into the bore holes whence it passes into solution in the existing water. In the case of concrete containing excess of gypsum or of sulphate of magnesium, solutions which react with the calcium or magnesium sulphate to form insoluble salts may first be injected, e.g. solutions of barium chloride or of a phosphate. Cement milk or mortar may also be injected under pressure.
