Abstract
382,830. Heating liquids by electricity. NORTH, N. E., 86, Strand, London. Oct. 5, 1931, No. 4212/32. Divided on 368,776. [Class 39 (iii).] In a heating system in which a body of liquid serving as a heat storing medium is brought into heat exchange relation with another fluid, which may be part of a circulating system. when it is desired. to transfer heat from the storing medium to the fluid, a heater is provided immersed in the storing medium and comprising a closed vessel containing bare wire electrical heating elements which are surrounded by a liquid of higher electrical resistance than the storing medium at the working temperature. The system particularly used employs glycerine, ethylene glycol, mannitol, dulcitol or other polyhydric alcohol, or diphenyl as heat storing medium, at 300‹ F. or more. When glycerine is used as storing medium, diphenyl or diphenyl oxide may be used in the vessel containing the heating element. A container 1 is provided for the heat storing medium divided by a partition 40 into inner and outer compartments, the medium being displaced by air pressure from the inner to the outer compartment into contact with the pipes 12 containing the circulating fluid. The air pressure is obtained by a pump 43 which runs continuously, a return pipe 45 for the air being closed automatically by a valve 46, when the temperature of the circulating fluid falls, to cause the displacement. The heat storing medium is heated by a vessel 71 containing bare wire heating elements 70 immersed in liquid of higher electrical resistance at the working temperature.
