Abstract
A method of making coatings or coverings for floors, walls, ceilings or other surfaces consists in adding to rubber latex powdered filling material to form a paste which finally hardens, spreading the paste on the surface to be coated, and pressing into the paste pieces of decorative material. The decorative material may be one or more of the following materials:-pieces of vulcanized rubber sheeting, hard wood, leather, porcelain or earthenware tiles, and marble slabs. The latex is preferably stabilized by the addition of a stabilizing agent, for example, cold water glue having a casein base. There may also be added to the latex vulcanizing ingredients, such as, for example, powdered sulphur, together with accelerators. To prevent deterioration of the coating an anti-oxidant may be added to the latex. Suitable fillers for the latex are one or more of the following:-china clay, asbestos, carbon black, barium sulphate, zinc oxide, powdered silica, powdered slate and alumina, or where rapid hardening is desired, filling material of a hygroscopic character such as silica, alumina or an hydraulic cement.
