[Class 100 (ii).] Inking-apparatus.-In an inking- apparatus in which a messenger roller contacts alternately with a fountain roller and a continuously rotating distributing roller, a driven member is located in such a position as to make driving contact with the messenger roller at a stage during its passage to the distributing roller. As applied to a cylinder machine having a reciprocating bed 7, a messenger roller 2 conveys ink from a fountain roller 1 to the first roller 3 of a set of continuously rotating rollers 3, 3a, 3b, 3c supplying a drum 4 from which the ink is intermittently transferred to a set of forme-inking rollers 5. Arranged in the path of the roller 2 is a roller 8 connected by chain gearing 9, 10, 11 to a shaft 12 carrying a gear 14 connected through gear 15 to a gear 16 connected to a sprocket wheel 17 over which passes an endless chain 18, the upper run of which is attached to a bracket 20 on the bed. Bv this means the roller 8 is driven alternately in opposite directions in accordance with the movements of the bed 7. The roller 2 is carried by levers 21, one of which is connected by a link 23 to a bell-crank lever 24 rocked by a cam 26 and link 25, and the movements are such that the roller 2 in moving from the fountain roller 1 engages with the roller 8 while this roller is at rest at the beginning of the printing stroke of the bed. During the portion of the printing stroke that the bed is moving uniformly, the roller 2 moves into engagement with the roller 3 and back again into contact with the roller 8, where it remains until this roller is again at rest at the end of the printing stroke of the bed.
