Abstract

381,939. Axle stops. KERSHAW, A. G. and WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. July 4, 1931, No. 19327. [Class 104 (ii).] In plant comprising a train of trucks 14 moved forwards intermittently by a ram or the like at one end, the trucks are maintained in end-to-end contact by fluid pressure rams which are disposed at the opposite end of the train and are adapted to exert continuous retarding pressure on the trucks both during their movement and while they are stationary. As shown, there is provided a pair of fluidpressure cylinders 2, 3, each having a piston-rod 4 carrying a crosshead 5 on which are mounted inclined arms 8 adapted to be tilted upwardly into engagement with the axle 13 of a truck by an arm 9 co-operating with a ramp 10. In operation, while the trucks are stationary, both rams are in the position shown at the left of Fig. 1 ; when the feeding ram is operated to propel the train forwardly, the pistons 4 are forced back against the pressure of fluid in the cylinders, the truck 14 then occupying the position 14<1>. Fluid-pressure operated adjustable scotch-blocks 12, which have previously been removed are then replaced, and one of the cylinders 2, 3 is operated to disengage its ram from the axle 13<1> and return it to its initial position in which it engages the next truck of the series. The second ram is then detached from the truck 14<1> which is now free to be moved away, and, returned to its initial position.
