[Class 5 (ii).] Apparatus for counting poultry of the type wherein a door is adapted to be closed to shut in the poultry when the proper number has entered the house or enclosure, comprises a single doorway, number-indicating means adapted to be operated on the entrance of each fowl by fowl-operated means, a door or gate in said doorway adapted to be closed when said means indicates a certain number and a further door or gate in said doorway arranged only to open inwardly and which is set to open position when a fowl enters the doorway by outer, fowl-operated means and returned to the closed position on operation of said firstmentioned fowl-operated means. The counting apparatus comprises a disc 1, teeth 3 on which are engaged by a pawl 4 operated by a treadle 5 through a link 6 and lever 7. A door 8 operated by a treadle 9 through a link 10 and lever 11 is held open by a catch 18 engaging a crank 19, said catch being released by means of a member 20 attached to the link 6. A door 12 is held open by a catch 13 which is released when an adjustable stud 14 on the disc 1 engages the lever 15. A spring pawl 16 engaging teeth 17 on the disc 1 prevents movement of the disc by more than one tooth at once. Springs return the treadles to their normal positions. The door 8 may be held in inoperative position during the daytime.
