Abstract

380,958. Safety razors. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd., J. and SWAIN, G., Napier Street, Sheffield. Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28030. [Class 30.] In a safety razor of the kind wherein a blade 10 is clamped transversely flexed between a guard 11 and a clamping-plate 12 and located by positioning-pins carried by either clamping- member, these pins, which may be fixed or spring-pressed, have a longitudinally inclined, tapered, pyramidal, spherical, or curved locating surface or surfaces, such as a conical surface 20, making contact at some point along its length with both sides of a positioning aperture in the unflexed blade when placed thereon. Pyramidal surfaces or a single surface so shaped, may be used to locate the blade endwise by contacting with the end edges of blade apertures when these are other than circular. With circular blade apertures, the blade is located in all directions by the taper surfaces. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the pins are carried on the transversely-curved, flat, or channelled upper surface of the guard. The channel 17, when provided, has rounded side edges 25 providing variable lines of support for the blade as it is flexed thereon. By varying the transverse position of the edges of the clamping-plate relative to the clamping edges of the guard the blade may either be flexed over the locating surfaces 20 of the pins throughout the entire clamping range or during the first stages of clamping only as shown in Fig. 1, further pressure lifting the blade from the surfaces 20. The upper ends 23 of the positioning-pins are cylindrical to engage countersunk apertures in the clamping-plate. The pins may be screwed or riveted to the guard, or the latter may be cast around their undercut lower ends. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the positioning-pins 20 are upwardly spring-pressed by a blade spring 29 clamped to the guard by a flange on the handle, which is riveted to the guard, the forked or plain free ends of the spring engaging slots in the pins. The blade spring may be replaced by coil springs housed in depending cups integral with the guard. The positioning-pins may be spring-pressed balls with cylindrical upper extensions. The blade may be located endwise by end lugs 27, 28 on the guard and clamping- plate, complementary to and closely engaging the flat or curved ends of the blade and adjacent plate. The guard teeth are formed by raised projections on a bar 18 separated from the guard-plate by a continuous or interrupted slot 19. In the form shown in Fig. 5, channels are formed under the blade edges. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, fixed positioning-pins are carried by the clamping-plate 12, the guard having a central channel so that the blade is flexed to a triple curvature.
