Abstract
380,153. Boot-making. BARBOUR. P. E., 176, Adams Street, Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-(Assignee of Vizard, W. C.; 179, Green Street, Brockton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) June 15, 1931, No. 17322. Convention date, April 30. [Class 17 (ii).] A calk welt comprising a grain-covered beaded edge 28, Fig. 8, to a leather strip is employed between the ordinary welt 28 and the upper of a shoe. The welt may have other uses, as it may be attached to the sole of a McKay or nailed shoe in position for the beaded edge to lie against the upper, or as a finishing welt for stitch-down shoes. A blank strip 10, Fig. 2, of grain leather is cut so as to remove a part 12 from the grain side and another 14 from the flesh. The central parts are then set up, as in Fig. 4, with the grain side 24 outermost. These portions are cemented prior to forming up, and the final moulding to shape, Fig. 6, may be performed successively as a continuous operation on an endless strip. In a modification, Fig. 7, the grain flap 30 is made shorter than the flap 24, being only long enough to cover the intermediate part 20. In Fig. 8 the flesh bottom lies against the Goodyear welt 32 and the body covered by the grain surface is secured by an inseam 34, the beaded edge 28 lying in the welt seam.
