Abstract

380,051. Damping rolling motion of ships. GES. FœR ELEKTRISCHE APPARATE, 44, Wilhelm V. Siemensstrasse, Marienfelde, Berlin. June 1, 1931, No. 16005. Convention date, May 30, 1930. [Class 113 (i).] In arrangements for damping the rolling motions of ships in which side tanks are alternatively pumped full and empty, a regulating- device for the pumps moves in phase with the angle of roll indicator so that feed is reversed as the ship passes through the horizontal position thus causing the liquid movement in the tanks to be displaced in phase by 90‹ so that the tank is being filled during the whole of its movement below the horizontal and is being emptied whilst above. The tanks 1, 2, either open to the sea or closed, are alternatively filled and emptied by the pressure and suction chambers 14, 15 connected by the blowing pump 17, the two-way valve 13 in the air conduit 4 effecting the desired alternation. The roll indicator 41 through the motor 40 and the gearing shown moves the controller switch arm 33 in phase over opposite contact paths 29, 30 lying in the armature current circuit of the motor controlling the cock 12 or directly driving the pump. To compensate for list the motion of the indicator 41 is fed to the screw 44 on which works a nut 45 supporting a spring-balanced hydraulic cylinder 42. Excessive one-sided movement of the cylinder is fed into the differential 37 and is then combined with the direct feed from the indicator 41.
