379,832. Valve components. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Wilcox-Rich Corporation; 9771, French Road, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Aug. 8, 1931, No. 22517. [Class 135.] Making ; cooling.-A poppet valve having a hollow stem for containing a cooling-medium is formed from a blank, Fig. 1, having an enlargement at 14, by drawing or swaging the enlarged end into the form shown in Fig. 2, after which the end is machined and drilled at 31 for the insertion of the cooling-medium. The hole 31 is then closed by a plug which is secured in place by welding an end piece in a countersunk portion 33. In a modification, the cooling-medium is introduced before swaging, the end of the stem being sealed after swaging by welding on a wearing tip. The cooling-medium may consist of 55 per cent potassium nitrate and 45 per cent sodium nitrate, and is introduced into the stem in powdered form and then melted by heating the valve.
