[Class 74 (ii).] A series of stop members 34 are moved so as to engage seriatim contact members 11, 12 mounted upon the thread carrier guide rods 10 of a straight-bar machine. The contact members 11, 12 upon each rod 10 are stepped, and pattern mechanism is provided whereby after a stop member 34 has engaged one step or contact member 11, 12 to arrest the movement of the guide rod 10 it can be displaced to engage the other step so that the same rod 10 may have additional movement. The additional movement allows thread to be fed to additional needles for forming suture loops of sectionally knitted fabric. The stop members 34 preferably comprise the connecting pins of an endless pattern chain 33. The chain is driven by pawls 19, 20 and ratchet wheels 16, 17 so that it is advanced one link during two reciprocations of the pawls 19, 20, and is guided between plates 37a, 38a mounted upon a pivoted block 39a. The block 39a is swung about its pivot by links 56a, 57a, 58a from cams 60a, 61a to control the engagement of a stop member with the stepped contact members of any of the rods 10. The cam follower 59a carried by the link 58a is controlled so that it engages either of two axially arranged cams 60a, 61a to actuate the block 39a, or is held from engaging either cam.
