Abstract

In treating colloidal suspensions of rubber such as latex in an autoclave at a temperature above that at which the liquid boils under atmospheric pressure, the space above the level of the liquid is maintained at a higher pressure than the vapour pressure of the liquid at the temperature of the liquid to prevent deposition of rubber on the surface of the autoclave. This may be effected by providing the upper portion of a steam heated jacketed autoclave containing diluted rubber latex with a coil fed with superheated steam. Alternatively steam, air or an inert gas such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen under pressure may be forced into the space above the liquid. In a further modification the upper portion of the autoclave including the lid may be jacketed and supplied with superheated steam to maintain its temperature equal to or greater than that of the lower part of the autoclave.
