Abstract
378,951. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London.-(Assignees of McCune, J. C. ; Edgewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 20, 1931, No. 14921. Convention date, June 18, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] In a driver's brake valve more particularly for straight air systems comprising a spring 9 the degree of compression of which is adjustable by a manually operated handle 38, the upper end of the spring 9 is provided with a cap 29 having rollers 32 pivotally mounted thereon and adapted to be engaged by a rotatable cam 34 to which the handle 38 of the valve is detachably secured, the cap is guided by a fixed stem 31 so as to be vertically but not rotationally movable. A strut member 43 is provided to transmit the movement of the cam mechanism if the spring fails. Compression of the spring 9 by the handle 38 depresses a piston 8 which closes the exhaust valve 18 by means of a spring 25 and opens the supply valve 12 which allows pressure fluid to pass from the reservoir pipe 16 though the chamber 7 to the brake cylinder supply pipe 45 until the pressure in the chamber 7 exceeds the pressure of the spring 9, when the piston 8 moves up to allow the valve 12 to reclose and obtain a lap position. The brake cylinder pressure is thus graduated and leakage is compensated by the consequent lower pressure in the chamber 7 allowing the piston 8 to descend and open the valve 12. The brake is released by reducing the pressure of the spring 9 and allowing the piston 8 to rise and lift the valve 18. The cap 29 is irregularly shaped so that only a portion of the periphery engages the guiding wall of the casing to reduce friction to a minimum. The cam 34 terminates in a tongue 36 engaging the slotted offset portion 37 of the handle 38. A pin 39 mounted in the portion 37 moves in a track 40 which prevents the handle being removed except in the full on brakes position in which position the pin is opposite an opening extending to the top of the casing.
