[Class 79 (v).] Locking means for a free-wheel device arranged in the transmission system independently of the main friction clutch, is controlled by one of the speed-controlling members, i.e. brake or accelerator, in such a manner that on positively operating the said controlling member to perform its usual function the free-wheel device is locked and remains positively locked as long as the controlling member is not in its fully released position. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 a free-wheel clutch arranged in a casing 13 at the rear of the gear-box 11b can be locked by means of a shaft 16 rocked by a link 18, bell crank 19 and cam 21. The cam is fixed on the shaft of a brake pedal 23, and its action is such that on the initial movement of the pedal a roller 20 on the bell crank 19 rides up the face 21a of the cam and locks the free-wheel, a lost-motion device being embodied in the brake gear so that the brake is not yet applied. Further movement of the brake pedal applies the brakes, but the roller 20 and the locking device are not affected thereby as the roller then rides on a circular part 21c of the cam. The pedal 23 may operate the throttle instead of the brake. The handbrake lever, when one is provided, may be independent of the free-wheel locking device.
