[Class 20 (iv).] In reinforcing mats for concrete roads &c. of the kind wherein zig-zag strips, placed on edge, are joined together at their engaging points to provide a mesh-like structure, the joining members comprise a base and an upstanding part having a slot therein to receive the strips, means being provided for retaining them therein. In one form, the member is formed by bending a blank with a central slot to form base parts 9, 10, Figs. 1 and 2, and an inverted U-shaped upright 8 the upper part of which is slotted to receive the straightened angles 15 of the strips, which are retained by nails &c. 11, or by continuous wires 16. Figs. 4 and 5 show a form in which the support consists of strip 17 the lower part of which is split, the parts being oppositely bent to form the base 18, 19 while the upper part is slotted for the strips, the slot having recesses for retaining loops 20, 21. In other similar forms, the recesses are on the outer edges of the top part, or the upper edge is bent over. Figs. 8 and 10 show a variation of the first modification in which the side members 8 are closed to form supports for connecting strips 29.
