Abstract

378,504. Wrapping-machines. ROSE, A. G. and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd., Albion Works, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. May 14, 1931, No. 14236. [Class 94 (i).] In a wrapping machine of the kind in which the projecting ends of a wrapper disposed in tubular form about the article are twisted to close the packet, for instance as described in Specification 150,076, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], a mandrel is inserted at each end of the tube during twisting so that the finished packet has open tubular ends as shown in Fig. 5. The article 12, Fig. 1, arrives at the closing position between the jaws 10, 11 of a mould wheel and with the wrapper 13 about it in the form of an open-ended tube. The twisting mechanism comprises jaws 24, 25 pivoted at 20, 21 on a rotatable spindle 15 extending inwardly in the form of a mandrel 17. The jaws conform to the shape of the mandrel as shown in Fig. 4. The mechanism is operated so that the spindle 15 moves axially inwards without any relative movement of the jaws until the mandrel is located within the tubular extensions of the wrapper. A roller 29 now allows the jaws to close under the action of a spring 26 and the jaws and mandrel are rotated to twist the ends of the wrapper. During the twisting operation the jaws approach further towards the article to compensate for the loss of effective length of the wrapper. The shape of the mandrel may be varied, the jaws in each case conforming thereto.
