v.Application led February 7',l 1925. Serial No. 7,480.
T all whomvitmay concern.' y
Be it known that I, MEYER BAYUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jenkintown, county of Montgomery, and StateV of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar'lBunch Machines, of which the following is a."i:'ull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which torm a part of this specication.
My invention relates to an improvement .in automatic jcigar bunch machines, and more particularly to an improved `form of crimper for cigar bunch machines of the au- ,tomatic type. I-Ieietoiore cigar bunch machines adapted for the production of cigar bunches have been known and have proved lsatisfactory to .a substantial degree. `However, such machines haveheretofore been usable,"from the ally cut out'before rolling by suitable cutters, and whereas is usual, 'the completed cigar is Adesired to have a reduced vend or ends, it is necessary to form the .bunchv into substantially Vfinal .shape while itis ystill damp and before -the application yofthe wrapper. For this purpose .-therehas been provided a device generally'known as a crimper., the bunch beingy passed through a ysoftening roll 'before entry into the crimper for shaping..
A typical vcrimper 'heretoforev utilized comprised -a pair of jaws actuated byv suitable mechanism to kmove toward each other other at right angles to the directionof their initial movement toward each other. A cradlepositioned between the jaws serves to support a bunch, 'the end portions ofV jected yto a and'then in opposite.directions one `to theV which, when the jaws initially move toward each other,.are' flattened and, when the jaws move o'ppositely at right angles to the di'- rection of their initial movement, are subp'ressedto final shape. 'The ends of .the'jaws beingrprovided with desirably shaped surfaces so that when the jawsj'are yfinally closed, ythe end portions of the bunch will be pressed into the desired shape.
Such crimpers areo'pen to various obj ections, but `principally in that, as a result of the :distinct pressures, at right angles to one another. to which the bunchV is subjected successively, the lfiller is improperly distributed in the ends of the bunch, there is a tendency to open the binder and the bunch has a very distinct\machine made appearriglitfangled pressure Vand ance as opposed to the desirable hand-made v appearance. practical and commercial/standpoint's ofthe Now it is the object of my inventionprovide a crimper which will enable thepro- Yduction of a superior bunch, in'which the Adesirable distribution of the filler will not be disturbed -an'd which will enable the pro? `du-ction of a cigar having arhandmadeappe'arance.
'Furthero'bjects of my invention areto provide a crimper of such a nature as will obviate the necessity for .passing the bunch through a softening roll before crimping and a ycrimper, which willV operate with equal efficiency upon bunches of such varia- 'tions in size as may result, for example, hfrom variationsin the amount-of filler fed tothe rolling device, or from stretching of the rolling apron'. Still vfurther objects of my inventionv are to provi-de a crimper which may operate on substantially the wholelength ofa cigar aii-donelwhich will be of a high degreev of efciency and'durabili-ty in operation and relatively lsimple of adjustment. Having now indicated, in a general way, the nature and purpose of my invention, I
-willvproceed to a detailed/description thereoff, with referencev to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a preterred embodiment, and in which-- Fig. l is an elevation of va portion of a cigar bunch machine embodying my im.- vproved crimping mechanism.
V- Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section through the crimpers on line 2-2 ofFig.
Fig. 3 is a similar view at right angles thereto taken on line 3 3v Fig. 2.
Fig. L is a plan view.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5 5 Fig. 3. Y f Fig. 6 isa diagrammatic view of the crimper jaws in an open relation.
Fig. 7 is an end view of the crimper jaws in closed relation.
In Vthe several drawings, a indicates the main frame of a cigar bunch machine and serves to support the various devices for forming the bunch and their driving mechanism. Upon a stand b is fixedly mounted a bracket member o for supporting a jaw member e. mounted bracket member c', guided by means of guide members Z and supporting a jaw member e.
The jaws e and e are complementary and oppositely disposed and present transversely Vextending bevel surfacesy leading toward the back of each jaw, as shown in Fig. G. The jaws longitudinally are shaped to the desired shape of the finished bunch so that as the two jaws are brought together a bunch confined thereby will be .gradually reduced, by rolling between the jaws, from its original substantially cylindrical shape to desired final shape. The jaws e, e are each composed of three sections, as shown in Fig. 4. V
Positioned between the jaws e and e is a platform f slidably supported on a pair Stand b also carries a slidab-lyy frame a. One endiof the lever operates the slidable bracket c', supporting jaw member e', by being directly entered in a slot therein, as shown in Fig. 3. The other end of of rods g fixed in and extending from the Y fixed bracket member c. The platform f serves to support a cradle Zz. intor which a bunch to be crimped is deposited by a transfer device z'. A rod y' is secured to the` platform f and extends through an aperture in the bracket c, its free vend lbeing provided with a collar Z6 through which it is connected to a lever Z pivotally mounted on a hanger m secured to bracket c. rlhe free end of lever Z passes through a slot in one end of a rod a secured to the slidable bracketc. The members forming the jaws e and e are transversely spaced as ato to permit them to clear the cradle when closed. Through lever Z, as shown in Fig. 3, it rwill be observed that as the jaws are brought together through the movement of bracket c' and jaw e toward jaw e, causing the bunch to be rolled toward jaw e, the cradle will be moved toward jaw e and will not inter- Yfere with the manipulation of the bunch by the jaws. The slots o in the jaws into which the cradle passes permits them to be brought together without interference with the cradle. f
The movable jaw member e is movedtoward and into crimping relation with the complementary fixed jaw member e by means of a lever 10 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on a hanger g carried by the lever is connected to one end of a rod r through an adjustable Spring s, the free end of the rod operates a cam-follower t adapted to follow a cam surface on a cam discu.
It will now be observed that if the cam disc u be rotated the rod r will be reciprocated, resulting in oscillation of lever p and reciprocation of jaw member e toward and away from jaw c., When a bunch is confined between the jaws a certain amount of resistance is presented to the final closing of the awsfand it is necessary to complete the crimping of the bunch to bring the jaws into final position in such a manner as to set the bunch to shape. This is acomplished through the medium ofrspring s, the cam surface being so cut as to tend to bring the jaws sharply to final position.
Adjacent the ends of the jaws e and e are suitably mounted and actuated locaters o, adapted, when a bunch. is deposited in the cradle ZL by the transfer z', to locate it properly lengthwise in relation to the jaws.
Positioned adjacent the ends ofthe jaws kare suitably operated knives w which are adapted to be actuated when the jaws are fully closedv to trim the ends of the bunch, From the above description, the operation of the crimper, will, it is believed, be clear.
However, .it should be noted that as theY Vtheir closed position when the bunch is set in final shape. During the rolling of the bunch, it is under the control of the cradle,
rwhich, as has been disclosed, is moved with the bunch toward the fixed jaw c, and prevents the bunch from turning out of line during the rolling.
It will be noted that the crimper in accordance with my invention acts upon the full length of the bunch preventing the formation of stem holes by avoiding bulging of any part of the bunch when pressure is applied and by crushing the stems inthe filler.
It will be further noted that the crimper shapes the bunch by rolling it to final shape, which serves to distribute the filler, avoids distortionof the filler and binder, prevents unwrapping of the binder, and results in the production of a superior bunch.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: f
1. A crimper for cigar bunch machines comprising, in combination, a pair of jaws llO and means to effect a relative movement of said jaws, Said jaws being complementary and so shaped as to, when relatively moved, roll a bunch between them and gradually reduce it to a nal desired shape.
2. A crimper for cigar bunch machines comprising, in combination, a pair of jaws adapted when closed to enclose a longitudinally extending space having the desired shapey of a bunch, said jaws being provided with transversely extending bevelled surfaces, means to position a bunch between said bevelled surfaces of said jaws, and means to move one of said jaws relative to the other, whereby said bunch will be gradually rolled and reduced to desired shape.
3. A criinper for cigar bunch machines comprising, in combination, a pair of jaws, said jaws being complementary and shaped transversely and longitudinally to effect, on relative movement in parallel planes, the gradual reduction of a bunch tol a desired shape by rolling, means to position a bunch between said jaws, and means for moving one of said jaws relatively to the other in a single plane.
4. A crimper for cigar bunch machines comprising, in combination, a pair of jaws, said jaws being complementary and shaped yPennsylvania, on this 21st day v transversely and longitudinally to effect, on
relative movement in parallel planes, the gradual reduction of a bunch to a desired shape by rolling, means for the support of a bunch between said jaws, means to move one of said jaws relative to the other, and means to move said supporting means to maintain its relative position on movement of said jaw.
5. A crimper for cigar bunch machines comprising, in combination, a pair ofjaws, said jaws being complementary and shaped transversely and longitudinally to effect, on relative movement in parallel planes, the gradual reduction of a bunch to a desired shape by rolling, a cradle positioned between said jaws for the support of a bunch, means to move one of said jaws relative to the other, means actuated by said movable jaw adapted to move said cradle on movement of said jaw whereby the relative position of said cradleV to -said jaws will remain substantially the same during movement of said jaw.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, of January,
MEYER BAYUK.
