[Class 108 (iii).] An actuating device for valves, electric switches and the like includes an elastic element loaded in its longitudinal direction to near its critical collapsing load and at the same time acted on by an internal or external moment. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a pressure regulator. The elastic strip 1 which is coupled to the spindle 9 of the valve 10 is held between a fixed member 2 and a pivoted member 4 by an adjustable spring 5. The actuating diaphragm 8 is adjustably loaded by a spring 13 and is coupled to an arm 6 mounted on the elastic member. As applied to an electrothermal cut-out, one contact is mounted on the member 1 and co-operates with a fixed contact adjustably secured to the member 2. The elastic member is bi-metallic so that when the current becomes excessive the switch opens. The member 4 is provided with an adjustable fulcrum so that the switch may be adjusted to remain open when the strip has cooled. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to a thermal switch for temperature regulation. The bimetallic strip 15 is clamped at one end to an insulating block 22 and at its free end carries a spring contact 23 adapted to work between a fixed contact 25 and an insulated adjustable stop 26. The loading spring 31 is arranged between a bracket on the strip 15 and a fixed abutment. A thermally actuated valve is described in which the bi-metallic strip is loaded by two springs, one arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the other as shown in Fig. 3. -
