Abstract
A surfacing composition immune from cracking and effloresence comprises cement, with or without a fine aggregate, a gelatinous body such as size, and a soluble or partly soluble silicate or fluosilicate not exceeding 5 or 25 parts respectively to 100 parts of cement. The size content should not exceed 50 parts to 100 parts of cement; casein may be used in place of size. The materials may comprise Portland, Roman or Puzzolana cement, sodium or potassium silicate, or sodium or magnesium fluosilicate. The composition may be applied by brushing, spraying or a cement gun and may be suitably coloured. The size and silicate may be added to the ganging water for the cement, or one of them may be added to the cement and the other to the water. Specification 3527/99, [Class 95, Paints &c.], is referred to.ALSO:A surfacing composition immune from cracking and efflorescence comprises cement, with or without a fine aggregate, a gelatinous body such as size, and a soluble or partly soluble silicate or fluosilicate not exceeding 5 or 25 parts respectively to 100 parts of cement. The size content should not exceed 50 parts to 100 parts of cement; casein may be used instead of size. Portland, Roman or Puzzolana cements may be used, the silicate may be sodium or potassium, and the fluosilicate may be sodium or magnesium. The composition is suitable for trowelling, spraying, brushing or by application by a cement gun, and may be suitably coloured. The size and silicate may be added to the gauging water for the cement, or one of them may be mixed with the cement and the other added to the water. The surface may have a preliminary water-proofing treatment such as a coat of silicate, and metal surfaces may first be coated with Angus Smith's solution. Slabs, bricks or tiles may be surfaced with the composition. Specification 3527/99, [Class 95, Paints &c.], is referred to.
