Abstract
377,912. Corrugating sheets ; making radiators. ERIKSSON, E. E., Degerfors, Sweden. Feb. 24, 1932, No. 5529. Convention date, March 13, 1931. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] In making dovetail or like corrugations in metal sheets, the sheet is first formed with upright corrugations and is then inserted in a die outlined in conformity with the troughs but having a free space below the top of the crests and the crests are pressed down against the die and counter-members, the outlines of which correspond to the desired outlines of the troughs. The previously corrugated sheet 2 is placed in a die 1 with the crests 4 spaced from the top of the projections 3. The upper die 7, the face 8 of which presses the crests against the top of the projections, carries countermembers consisting of bars 9, which are normally held together by springs 17. On the downward movement of the die 7, prior to the pressing operation, the bars are pressed outwards so as to fill the lower parts of the troughs by shouldered wedge-members 10 which are normally projected by springs 13 from the face of the die. During the subsequent pressing operation in which the sides of the crests are pressed against bevelled surfaces of the bars 9, the springs 13 prevent displacement of the sheet. The wedge-members are provided at their ends with flanges 11 engaging shoulders 12 on the bars so as to raise them from the troughs after the springs 17 have drawn the bars together during the upward movement of the die 7. The wedge members are slotted at intervals so as to pass over the springs 17. The projections 3 and the surfaces 8 may be plane or shaped surfaces. The collapsable countermembers may be replaced by fixed members inserted and removed longitudinally of the corrugations. The corrugations may be dovetailed simultaneously or one by one. A sheet may also be produced in which a part only thereof is corrugated or in which only a number of the corrugations are dovetailed ; thus in making corrugated sheets for heating radiators the sheets may be provided with one or more strips only of dovetailed corrugations, these being utilized for subsequently holding the sheets together.
