Abstract
784,736. Making heat exchangers; stamping. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 8, 1956 [Feb. 14, 1955], No. 3931/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming a tube and plate heat exchanger comprises forming a groove in a plate, working the plate to decrease the depth of the groove and form a double-walled rib at each side and then assembling the tube in the groove and clinching the ribs over the tube. The plate 13 is formed with a number of parallel grooves 22 between dies 19, 21, each groove being separately formed. The plate is then transferred to a press having a number of die combinations 29, 31 which act on all the grooves simultaneously to correct any inaccuracies in their spacing and also to decrease the depth of the grooves by pushing up the side walls to form part of double-walled ribs 44 extending along each side of the grooves. A serpentine refrigerant carrying tube 12 is then arranged with its straight portions 14 lying in the grooves and is secured by clinching over the ribs 44 between dies 47, 48. Finally the ends of the plate and tube are bent between dies and edge plates 17 are welded or otherwise secured to the plate 13.
