Abstract

377,851. Propelling by oscillating vanes. OSTENS, A., 18, Eastbourne Road, Linthorpe, Middlesborough. Oct. 27, 1931, No. 29766. [Class 114.] A ship is provided with wings on each side of the hull which are adapted to rock on a normally horizontal transverse axis and to assume angular positions adapted to provide a propulsive effect on pitching of the vessel. Blades b are secured to a shaft c supported in bearings d in the hull h. At the centre the shaft runs through a cylinder and carries a vane q which co-operates with a division plate o having a dashpot orifice s. Means may be provided for enlarging or reducing the size of the holes in order to control the braking effort and may be completely closed in order to lock the wings in position. Other suitable means such as springs may be utilized. Further, adjustable stops may be provided in order to regulate the angle through which the wings may rock. The shaft c may be adapted to drive auxiliary machinery in the ship. The blades are preferably stream line in section and elliptical in shape. They may be formed in one piece, or with two plates and hollow. When fitted at the extreme stern or bow one continuous wing may be disposed transversely to project equidistantly to port and starboard and when on the stern may be attached to the rudder. The wings may be mounted so that they can be withdrawn into the ship when the rudder is alongside a quay. According to the provisional Specification the wings are stated to provide a propelling effect under rolling as well as pitching.
