Abstract
A disinfectant or dentifrice comprises a soluble sulphocyanide treated with a protecting substance for nullifying its hygroscopic properties, and a solid water soluble acid substance such as an acid or acid salt. The added protective substance should be such as will not impair substantially the solubility of the sulphocyanide. It may also be added to the acid component before admixture with the sulphocyanide. Suitable protective substances are tragacanth, gelatine, albumin, dextrin, saponin, and the like, to which a suitable hardening agent may sometimes be added, e.g. formaldehyde, tannic acid. Gypsum is also suitable as a protective agent. Alkaline substances may also be added, e.g. borax, carbonates or bicarbonates and these are rendered sufficiently difficultly soluble by a coating substance such as resin to enable the sulphocyanic acid to become effective before recombination with the alkaline substance. Suitable acid substances for effecting the decomposition of the sulphocyanide are tartaric, citric, boric acids and potassium bisulphate. The components may be separately granulated with the protective agents and then mixed. Carbonates are effective additions to dentifrices and powders for mouth washes &c. and may be mixed with the sulphocyanide and a protective agent before admixture with the acid, which in this case will be in quantity sufficient to react with both the other components. The mixtures may have a polishing agent added to produce a dentifrice. They may be formed into tablets &c. or converted into a paste by admixture with a liquid in which the substances are insoluble. According to an example a mixture of calcium sulphocyanide, saponin, and saccharine is dissolved in water and the solution stirred with sufficient gypsum to produce a slightly moist mass which is dried at 70-80 DEG C. Tartaric acid is mixed with tragacanth and a small quantity of alcohol stirred into the mixture, the mass being then dried. The two components are then intimately mixed.
