Abstract

375,800. Heating water by electricity. PETRIE, D. G., 40, Guessens Court, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. March 20, 1931, No. 8656. [Class 39 (iii).] Some or all of a number of tanks, all arranged exteriorly to one another, are fitted with heating elements which are not all of the same capacity. The elements may increase progressively in capacity throughout the series of tanks or the arrangement may comprise an element of large capacity in the outlet tank and elements of small and equal capacities in the other tanks. In the Figure tanks 1, 2 are fitted with elements 21 controlled independently by thermostats 22 adjusted to different temperatures. The tanks are a sliding fit in guides mounted on a frame 8. The lower ends rest on bars 3 mounted on a frame 4. The frames are secured to supporting straps 5. The tanks are lagged and enclosed by a rectangular casing 6. The water enters tank 1 at the bottom through a valve 10 and is discharged from the top of tank 2 through a pipe 13. A pipe 12 connects the top of tank 1 and the bottom of tank 2. A connection 20 equalizes the pressures in the tanks. A cock 26 carrying a test pipe 24 is fitted to each tank and may be removed to empty the tanks. In a modification there is no inlet valve, but a valve is fitted to the outlet. In this case the pressure equalizing connection 20 opens into an expansion pipe. In another modification the inlet and outlet pipes enter the tanks through their upper ends. In a further modification a feed tank with a ball cock is arranged in the casing above the tanks. Other arrangements comprise tanks arranged horizontally or one above the other. Two further arrangements employ a primary tank connected to two independent tanks. In one case the tanks are side by side and in the other the primary tank is arranged above the other two.
