Abstract
375,168. Printing-surfaces. UHER, E., 2, Ottostrasse, Augsburg, Germany, and UHER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Glarus, Switzerland. Oct. 19, 1931, No. 28988. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1930. [Class 100 (ii).] A printing block or roller consists of a porous non-metallic support or backing, capable of resisting compression and distortion, a top metal layer which is pierced according to the picture, and a very thin intermediate metal layer permeable to the ink or other colouring medium and firmly adhering to the printing side of the backing. The ink or colouring medium is applied under pressure from the back of the block or roller. The backing may be of pumice-stone, artificial stone, or porcelain, and the intermediate metal layer may be a noble metal such as silver. The metal layer may be applied directly to the porous backing by cathodic dispersion. For example, a warm, hollow, porcelain roller is placed upright in a vacuum chamber having a pressure of about 0À11 mm. of mercury, and silver wires of about 0À1 to 0À2 mm. thickness are placed at equal intervals around and about 5 or 6 cm. from the roller, the wires being cathodes in a circuit of from 1000 to 1500 volts and 0À5 amperes. Another method of depositing the intermediate metal layer consists in evaporating the metal by heating, distillation, or sublimation, and condensing it on the backing. The intermediate metal layer is then given a top coating of metal, such as copper, by an electrolytic or other process, so as to render the block or roller practically wholly impervious to the ink or other colouring medium. The top layer is then pierced according 'to the picture it is desired to print, by photochemical or other means.
