Abstract

[Class 87 (ii).] The depolarizing composition to be pressed is withdrawn from the supply vessel by means of an endless conveyer passing through the vessel, and then transferred to the moulds. Preferably, the supply vessel is placed above the moulds, and the endless conveyer belt moves along the bottom of the vessel, so that the composition is continuously withdrawn in a layer of uniform thickness, the thickness being determined by an adjustable slot in the side wall of the vessel. The composition is removed from the conveyer belt by scrapers, blades or the like moving transversely to the belt, and is passed down inclined shoots to the shaping mould. If several pressing devices are to be supplied from one conveyer belt, the scrapers sweep over the belt at different altitudes suitably graded. In the mode of operation illustrated in the drawings, the pressing device consists mainly of a shaping mould 1 and a finishing mould 2, with punches 3, 4 disposed coaxially one on each side and driven in opposite directions by cams 5, 6. Inside the punch 4 a piston 7 is provided having a reciprocatory movement imparted thereto by a crank wheel 8, whereby carbon rods from a magazine 9 are forced into the depolarizing composition to be pressed. In the construction illustrated, two sets of finishing devices are provided in juxtaposition, and the finishing moulds 2 are caused to rotate. The conveyer belt 20 enters and leaves the supply vessel 19 through slots ; at the point of egress a member 29 adjustable in height is provided to spread the composition evenly over the belt. The composition on the belt is divided into portions by the knives 27, 28, and is passed to the shaping moulds over inclined shoots 39 by scrapers 30, 31 moving transversely to the direction of movement of the conveyer belt. The scraper 30 removes only half the composition, the remainder being removed by the scraper 31. As the width of the scrapers is adjusted to the stepping movement of the belt, the latter is wiped perfectly clean.
