Abstract
427,480. Moulding tiles &c. in endless-chain machines. McCONNEL, J. C. I., 10, Cambridge Place, Victoria Road, Kensington, London. Oct. 18, 1933, No. 28889. [Class 87 (ii)] Tiles, bricks, &c. are moulded by an apparatus in which cement is carried through an aperture by an intermittently moving conveyer to form a continuous moulded length which is afterwards cut up, the intermittent movement being such that the period of rest is shorter than the feed period. During moulding, pallets 38 constituting the conveyer travel along a frame 11. The intermittent feed mechanism comprises a belt pulley 20 which drives through gearing a crank 25. The crankpin 26 engages a block 27 which slides on a pivoted arm 28 connected at its lower end to a feeding member 31 carrying a pawl which engages the pallets on its forward movement. By means of the slide block 27 the arm 28 is moved slowly forwards and rapidly backwards. The pallets 38 are supplied to the feed mechanism by a continuously moving belt 13, provided with a gap 42, and are retained on the belt by a detent 60 which is released by the backward movement of the arm 28. The pallets slide on angle irons 35 which are held to the frame 11 by dogs 36 and pass under the wall 71 of the hopper 15 where they are charged with cement and sand. The wall 71 is hung so that it can lift if a misplaced pallet should enter the hopper. The cement is shaped on the pallet by a roller 73 which has a concave face and beveled flanges 76. A slipper 75 scrapes the roller 73 and compresses the cement on the pallets. A key-marking device comprising a spring-controlled plate 80 having a grid of marking blades on its underside is pressed on to the cement by a cam lever, and V-shaped blades 184 are also provided to indent the cement at the places whore it is subsequently cut. The pallets then pass through a second hopper 16, which supplies facing material, and under a roller 90, which is not provided. with a bevel 76 so that the edges of the tiles are coated with facing material. The cement strip is cut into tiles by knives 100 and nail holes are formed by punches 101 carried by a camoperated plate 17, two tiles being formed on each pallet. A box 18 with a perforated bottom supplies pigment to the surface of the tiles and is provided with a tapping device operated by the cam 124. All the various devices are driven in timed relationship from the pulley 20 through shafts and bevel gearing. According to the Provisional Specification the first roller 73 may have grooves or ridges to form the key marks.
